Preventing family separation in Brazil
Associação Brasileira Terra dos Homens (ABTH) strives to prevent family separation, making it an exception, and when it is undertaken, temporary.
ABTH has worked in the field of innovative foster care for nearly 20 years, considering it to be an alternative, temporary solution for some children from violent family contexts.
This foster care is short or medium term, a temporary circumstance of up to (and never more than) two years. It exists while ABTH works with the original family to be able to protect the children.
In this way foster care becomes a potentially preventative measure. It creates a protective environment for maintaining children with their families; if the original family has a great deal of work and the parents need a break, foster care can relieve the pressure. Approximately 80% of children in institutions in Brazil have some sort of recoverable family bond.
- Provides psychosocial support to families in some of the most violent communities in Brazil;
- Aims to demonstrate that intervention with children at an early age from violent urban communities can contribute to a process of relationship transformation.

This is Family for Every Child
Family for Every Child has 19 organisations from 18 countries across the world united by a common vision of a world where every child can grow up in a permanent, safe and caring family.
We cannot provide good foster care if we don’t know how to work with the original families in violent contexts, if they are not considered as a part of the intervention from the very beginning.
